Invincible.

Iím not sure if Iím getting across to people. Is it because Iím not redundant enough? Is it because I donít harp incessantly on this point? Am I not shrill and pushy and annoying? Are the statistics not motivating, is the evidence not clear? Okay, then, Iíll say it again:

Youíve got to exercise to lose weight. And then, when youíve reached a good weight and level of fitness for you: Youíve got to exercise some more, nearly every day, for the rest of your life.

Why? Well, because, youíre an animal. Sorry, sweetness, but you werenít designed to sit still, no matter how cushy the cushions, no matter how firm the foam. No matter how inwardly inward, bookish, and thoughtful you are. You were made to move. And so, if you value your health, you will move, as much as you can, for as long as you can.

You donít have to hate it, or overthink it, or do it competitively. It doesnít have to be expensive, adventuresome, social, or pretty, it just has to happen. Today. Tomorrow.

You wonít have to do it the same way every day, or commit to a lot of expensive equipment or spend thousands on memberships, although if thatís fun for you, then by all means. Just move. Just exercise.

We were built for movement, and our health depends on it. Movement increases circulation, circulation fires all the complex and interdependent biochemical reactions that make a body go and keep it healthy for the long run. Movement builds muscle, encourages bone formation, each activity driving up your metabolism to use up the energy you consume.

And of course, the more you move, the more you can use what you consume, the less fat youíll deposit on your frame.

We were never designed to sit still all day long. Instead, we were built to stay on our feet most of the day, wandering about, hunting down our food. If, like me, you spend a great deal of your day seated, mainly inert, moving from car to desk and back again, then you need to make up for it. Take breaks every couple of hours to walk up and down a flight or two of stairs. Walk on your lunch hour, park in the farthest spot. Try morning calisthenics, evening aerobics. Put an exercise bike in your office, and hop on for 15 minutes or so every couple of hours to pump up your heart rate while you think through your next tasks. Can you ride a bike to work? Walk? Get off the subway or bus route a couple of stops early?

At first itíll be something you have to force yourself to remember to do. But eventually, with plenty of practice, youíll find that moving comes, well, naturally. Just spend some time today remembering that you are an animal, and like all animals, you need room to move. Then do it.

    I try to do 30 min. on the treadmill about 3miles an hour. Then I try to do that again maybe one or 2 more times during the day. Do you think this all adds up or is it better to do it all at once?

    It’s fine to do it in sections throughout the day. In fact, recent studies have shown it might be better to break it up, because it fires your metabolism up twice (or thrice) a day instead of just once. The main point is that you do it. Doesn’t matter if it’s all at once or broken up.

    Good post JuJu. Unfortunately, it’s not the exercising part I have problems with. It’s the EATING part. God, I love food. ūüôā

    Brenda, I would go to the library and check out the Prism Diet (not sure if that is spelled right) It is a low carb diet “except” you can eat fruits & veggies. You only cut out your basic, white flour, sugar(if it’s in the first 4 ingred.) white rice, potatoes. That’s the basic things. Then you gradually add in brown rice, baked potatoes & wheat bread. It’s the easiest diet that I have found. … even I can follow it. I’ve lost 17 lbs & 10 inches. I can’t believe it, this time I actualy stuck to it & excercised with it too.
    The diet is one that you are “suppose” to pay for, like weight watchers, but you can get it from the library for free, and I copied all the pages that I needed. It’s a great diet, when I wanted sweets I snacked on apples & grapes when I wanted salty it was porkrinds & peanuts. Check it out! You can eat plenty & it works!

    Thanks Cindy, I might look that up. I try to stay away from white, processed junk as it is, but it still sounds like it’s worth checking out!
