Of course by now you know Mo’s Diet Blog site “Mr. Ointy,” see diet blogs links on the right-hand navigation at skinnydaily.com if you haven’t been (why haven’t you been there yet?). After many posts wondering and considering the subject of our worldwide obsession with fatness, and particularly feminine fat, she decided to launch a discussion site.
Hours after she decided to do it, she launched “Big Fat Deal,” and it’s hot, HoT, HOT! No, really. Interesting voices discussing, debating, considering, refuting. Good stuff.
Go there if the subject interests you at all. Here’s her intent:
“So what’s the Big Fat Deal? Well, at the risk of getting all mission-statementy, I think it’s important to call attention to issues of weight in the media, pop culture, and society. If we can convince at least one teenage girl that Ashley Olsen isn’t “the fat twin,” we will have done our job.
It’s lovely. Go. Do. Join in.
It’s not a prerequisite, but you might want to read up on the subject in two books readers have recommended here before:
Fat History: Bodies and Beauty in the Modern West, Peter N. Stearns
Survival of the Prettiest: The Science of Beauty, Nancy Etcoff
(And oh, has anyone seen the cover of the National Geographic? Granted, an artful shot, but once again headlessness. I hope she doesn’t try to drive like that. Anyway look inside for a several-hour MRI of a woman my former weight and a woman at 20% body fat. It’s the first real picture I’ve seen of intra-abdominal fat. I found that instructive.)
